11 Traits of a Mumin

We hear from scholars that we should be Mumins, but what are the qualities must we possess to be classified as Mumins?  We don’t need to go further than the Quran to get an answer to that question.

Allah Taala has mentioned some special traits of the true believers and His favoured servants in eleven verses of Surah Furqan.

Hereunder are the verses with the translations.

1. Submission to Allah Taala, humility and diplomacy.

The slaves of Allah Taala are those who walk on the earth with humility. When the ignorant people speak to them, they say salaam.

Salaam in the above verse refers to averting a confrontation and diplomatically responding to ignorant people.

2-Qiyamul layl.

Those who pass the night prostrating and standing before their Lord.

Special mention of night worship is made here because,

1. This time being a time of rest, requires extra effort

2. It rules out the possibility of show.

3-Fear for Allah Taalas punishment.

Those who say, our lord, avert from us the punishment of Jahanum. Indeed, its punishment is a persisting affliction.

Despite their constant Ibadat, these people do not sit content, but they are always fearful of Allah Taala and the day of Qayamah and the punishment of Jahanum.

And those, who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor niggardly, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes).

5-Abstinence from Shirk.

And those who invoke not any other ilah along with Allah Taala.

6-Sanctity of life.

Those who don’t kill such life that Allah has forbidden, except for just cause.

 7-Modesty and Chastity.

They do not commit illegal sexual intercourse.

Those who do not witness falsehood.

If they pass by some evil play or evil talk, they pass by it with dignity.

The true believers are noble. If they ever pass by evil gatherings, they seek their Lord’s refuge and move on. They don’t engage in the evil and they don’t belittle the wrong doers in spite of them resenting the evil.

Those who, when they are reminded of the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of their Lord, fall not deaf and blind.

Those who say “Our Lord! Bestow on us from our wives and our offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes, and make us leaders for the Muttaqeen.

May Allah SWT make us all true Mumins.
